Drop boxes closing permanently from 17 October 2026
From 17 October 2026, our after-hours animal drop boxes will be permanently closed.
This decision has been driven by the significant ongoing staff safety, animal welfare and biohazard concerns associated with unsupervised after-hours drop-offs.
So, what should you do if you find a stray animal after hours?
Dogs
If you find a stray dog after hours, please contact Councils after hours contact number on (02) 6354 9999.
Cats
If you are able to safely contain a stray cat overnight, please keep them somewhere safe, secure and weather-protected and contact your local animal shelter during the next business day for advice.
If the cat has been caught in a humane trap, the trap can be kept somewhere secure and protected overnight while you wait to contact the shelter.
Injured or sick animals
If an animal is injured, seriously unwell or appears to be suffering, please take them to the nearest open veterinary clinic for urgent assessment and treatment.
Please don't leave an injured or suffering animal without veterinary attention.
Thank you for helping us keep both animals and staff safe as we move to safer after-hours arrangements.
If you're ever unsure what to do with a stray animal, please contact the shelter during opening hours for advice.
